Kristoffer W. Tieber devotes most of his practice to criminal appeals, postconviction proceedings, and federal habeas litigation, and is committed to providing personal, attentive and individualized representation to each client. Kris has worked throughout the state on a variety of criminal appellate cases, and speaks to prisoners, advising them of the appellate process. He actively participates in the legal profession as a member of organizations such as the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, and the Ingham County Bar Association. Kris also continually attends training seminars to build up his wealth of knowledge, and to guarantee that the Tieber Law Office is aware of every change in the field of criminal law.

Kris graduated Cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law and had the distinguished opportunity to have been trained in appellate practice by one of the top criminal appellate lawyers in the country, F. Martin Tieber. Kris has worked at the Tieber Law Office since 2004, and has assisted with, and personally handled, cases in the Michigan Circuit Courts, Michigan Court of Appeals, Michigan Supreme Court, federal district courts, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. ​​

F. Martin Tieber is a highly experienced appellate criminal defense practitioner who specializes in direct state criminal appeals, state postconviction proceedings, and federal habeas litigation.  He has been described by the Detroit Free Press and Michigan Lawyers Weekly as “one of the nation’s top criminal appellate experts.”   For a quarter century he directed the Lansing office of the State Appellate Defender, a nationally acclaimed agency. Mr.Tieber’s appellate experience consists of hundreds of cases, and, for over forty years, he has practiced in nearly all of Michigan’s trial courts, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, the federal district courts for the Eastern and Western Districts in Michigan, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, and the United States Supreme Court. 

Mr. Tieber received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1972 and his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1975.  He has served as President of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and is a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.

In 2002, Mr. Tieber was recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as a Lawyer of the Year.  He was instrumental in establishing Michigan’s Innocence Project in 2002, and was elected the first chair of the Innocence Project Commission.  Mr. Tieber served for decades as an adjunct professor at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, and lectures extensively on many criminal law issues – including Michigan postconviction practice under MCR 6.500 and federal habeas litigation.  Along with law partner Kristoffer W. Tieber he continues to provide yearly criminal law update presentations for the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and for ICLE and the State Bar of Michigan at the Upper Michigan Legal Institute.
